Bell Wins National DoD Nunn-Perry Award

Bell Helicopter Textron and Control Logistics Inc (CLI) ― a small business owned by a woman ― located in Lake Worth, FL, were recently presented with the 2009 DoD Nunn-Perry Award, for Mentor-Protégé Program excellence at the national Mentor-Protégé Conference in San Francisco.

This was Bell’s third prestigious DoD Nunn-Perry Award for program excellence, to provide small business assistance with sponsorship and funding by the US Army and Navy commands.

THREE YEAR PROGRAM

The 3-year program is sponsored and funded by the US Army Space & Missile Defense Command (SMDC-RDCM), based in Huntsville, AL. The key purpose is to provide development assistance to prime contractors and small business suppliers to the DoD. By promoting participation and profitable growth within the DoD supply chain, the program ultimately supports the nation’s warfighters.

CLI is a manufacturer of acrylic and polycarbonate rotorcraft transparencies, such as windshields, windows, canopies, skylights and chin bubbles. It has become a major spares supplier to the Defense Logistics Agency. CLI is also an approved supplier to Bell Fort Worth and Bell Canada. In addition, CLI provides transparencies to L-3 Communications for the UH-1Y fuselage, as well as Boeing aircraft and All-Systems Aerospace.

Mrs. Victoria Cavanagh is CLI’s owner & CEO and Andres Budo is President & COO, were present to receive the award. The program was recognized for major milestones completed during the second year of the partnership.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

1. a 1-3-5yr master business plan and market segment landscape analysis,
2. a 5-yr strategic product plan,
3. AS9100 quality system certification,
4. CATIA v5 training, laminated acrylic-polycarbonate prototype parts,
5. revenue growth,
6. employee base expansion,
7. an enterprise-wide integrated IT system criteria analysis, with recommended service providers, and
8. a much needed facility expansion.

PARTICIPANTS

Alan Allman is Staff Engineer, and Bell Mentor-Protégé Program Manager, and is supported by Martin Peryea, Chief Engineer and the program’s Executive Sponsor. Bell’s Small Business Liaison Officer, Melissa Holland, ensures these unique small business programs are included within the company’s Comprehensive Small Business Subcontracting Plan. The collated information is presented as a report, and  focuses on all small business subcontracting activity with the DoD, as well as a prime contractors and supplier initiatives.

Program partners contributing to the success were: Ms. Nancy Young, Director, Small Business Development Center – Florida Atlantic University (SBDC-FAU), Boca Raton, FL, and Mr. Brian Rhodes, Executive V.P., RSI, Wichita, KS; an international aerospace & defense sales and marketing firm representing the protégé firm in the global marketplace.
